Л л like L in “letter”

The consonant [л] is sonorous. To pronounce the hard [л] the whole body of the tongue is retracted.

In the articulation of the soft [л’] the front and middle part of the tongue is raised as in [и] and presses against the upper teeth, alveoli and the front part of the hard palate.

The past tense of verbs.

The English counterparts of the Russian past tense are The Past Indefinite, The Past Continuous, the Present Perfect and the past Perfect.

ЧИТА-ТЬ – ЧИТА+Л – ЧИТАЛ

The past tense of verbs whose infinitive ends in –ить is formed by adding the suffix –л to the infinitive stem. There are only 3 form of the Past tense:

Masculine Singular я, ты, он читал

Feminine Singular я, ты, она читала

Plural мы, вы, они читали.

Дать (to give) – дал, дала, дали Пить (to something liquid) –пил, пила, пили

Быть (to be) – был, была, были любить (to love, to like) – любил, любила, любили

Intonation. Various versions of IC-3, or Tune 3, demonstrate a change meaning within the same question as the intonational center shifts from one word to another:

The use of the verb быть.

Present tense Past tense

Он в комнате. He is in the room. Он был в комнате. He was in the room.

Она в комнате. She is in the room. Она была в комнате. She was in the room.

Они в комнате. They are in the room. Они были в комнате. They were in the room.

The verb быть is not used in the present tense.
