Every Russian word has a stress which means that one of its syllables is pronounced longer, more distinctly than the rest. This syllable, like the vowel it contains, is called stressed. Stress is very important in Russian because it helps to distinguish different words and different forms of the same word.

    ˘                              ˘

Дома (at home) -  дома (houses)

The stress in Russian is free, it may fall on any syllable in a word, so there is a variety of rhythmic, or stress, patterns.
